Shanghai 2008 to 2012

Shanghai 2008 to 2012

My first ever trip to China was in 2008 to Shanghai.
The ideas I had about Shanghai were that it was the most cosmopolitan city in China and that a very popular drama series "Shanghai Bund" was based on the city.
Other than that, I didn't know what to expect.
It was really exciting to be in China for the first time!

This is a collection of various trips to Shanghai from 2008 to 2012.

My coworker brought me to the Yu Gardens Old Town area.
The red building is a very old teahouse, the Huxingting teahouse.
It is one of the oldest teahouses in Shanghai.

We had some flower tea in a pot with quail eggs and tofu snacks.
This was the start of my love with various Chinese tea.

The Yu Gardens area is a major tourist attraction with plenty of old style Chinese buildings and very crowded!

The food workers below are preparing XiaoLongBao, a small steamed dumpling very popular in Shanghai, at a famous dumpling restaurant.
There is also a pan fried version which is also very tasty.
Definitely try these if you go to Shanghai!
I wonder if the bone is real...

What is very interesting about Shanghai and China, is the mix of old and new, traditional and modern.
Here is the Bund area, an area beside the Huangpu river with ultra modern skyscrapers, quite in contrast with the old buildings in the Yu Gardens nearby.

One of the small side streets in Shanghai where vendors sell produce, fish, meat on the streets.

Another popular area is Nanjing Road.
One section is pedestrian only, with plenty of malls and shops.

Some photos of yummy Shanghai cuisine.
Shanghai food tends to be sweet, quite different from spicy Sichuan food.
In order as they appear, Roast duck, Fried fish, Braised mushrooms, Shanghai sesame noodles, Roast chicken, pan fried dumplings(shengjian), noodle soup and fried pork cutlets
The noodles are very good!
